EMILY LYONS

A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE
AND ADVOCACY

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, on July 18th, 1956, Emily Lyons earned her BSN in 1977 from The University of Alabama in Birmingham, specializing in reproductive health. Her diverse nursing career includes roles in labor and delivery, home health care, emergency rooms, and teaching at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. As the Director of Nursing at the New Woman All Women Healthcare Clinic in Birmingham, Emily’s responsibilities ranged from drug administration and counseling to performing ultrasounds and assisting with surgeries. Her life changed dramatically on January 29th, 1998, when a bomb exploded outside her clinic, resulting in the tragic death of a police officer and leaving Emily seriously injured. After months of recovery, Emily channeled her experience into advocacy, becoming a powerful voice for women’s rights and against violence toward reproductive health providers.

Emily has been featured in prominent publications such as Good Housekeeping, Ms. Magazine, People, and The New York Times, and has appeared on major TV programs including Nightline, The Today Show, and Larry King Live. Her story has resonated globally, with messages of support pouring in from around the world. Emily has also played an active role in legislative efforts, testifying before Congress to prevent the weakening of the RICO Act in cases of violence against clinics and advocating for clinic workers’ and patients’ protection. She has collaborated with notable figures including Janet Reno, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Gloria Steinem, and has been recognized with awards such as the Margaret Sanger Woman of Valor Award from Planned Parenthood and the Gloria Award from the Ms. Foundation.

Today, Emily Lyons continues her tireless work, speaking out across the nation in defense of women’s rights and reproductive health.
